Missing is Rhonda Losey.  The team is coached by Chris Niklaus and Pat Horton.
The 2009-2010 Kane Competition Cheerleaders have spent the past six months supporting the Kane Wolves fall and winter sports’ athletes and musicians.
In the words of Head Coach Chris Niklaus, “all season long this team supports all of the Kane teams in one shape or form. Either through making signs, cheering the teams on at games or watching performances at halftime.”
Now it is time for the Kane students, and the community as a whole to do the same for the cheerleaders.
The Competition squad will participate later this week in the Cheer LTD Nationals in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Niklaus, who also serves as the Assistant Technology Director for the Kane School District, has been coaching the squad for more than a decade, along with Pat Horton.
There are three distinct cheerleading seasons at KAHS--Fall Cheer, Winter Cheer, and Competitive Cheer.
According to the district’s website, “the cheerleader’s priority is to support athletics, music and community within the Kane Area School District.”
Members of the competition team are selected during tryouts held in the spring.
“Being a competition cheerleader is very time consuming and is equivalent to participating in all three athletic seasons, fall, winter and spring.”
The 2009-2010 Kane Competition Cheerleaders have twelve members and three alternates.
There are two seniors on this year’s squad, Paige Edinger and Amanda Mix.
There are seven members of the junior class on this year’s team, Samantha Battaglia, Melia Brocious, Christina Cecchetti, Trishia Hollingshead, Emily Perry, Stevana Perry, and Ashlie Weidenhoff.
Sophomore Lea Earley, freshman Christina Moore, and seventh grader Sarah Szymanski round out the team, while Kehlie Hulings, Rhonda Losey and Taylor Grube serve as alternates.
The squad has enjoyed much success this season.
They finished fourth at early-season competitions in Ridgway and Johnsonburg, as well as at the District IX Invitational, an improvement from last year’s seventh place finish.
They finished in second place in competitions at Bald Eagle High School, Elk County Catholic, Keystone High School, and Slippery Rock University’s UCA Cheer Regional.
The team took home the top honors at the Steel City Regional Championships at Robert Morris University in the Varsity Non-Tumble Division, the COA Steel City Cup Championships, and the McDowell CCC Regional, as well as their own Kane Mid-Winter Cheer Classic.
Coach Niklaus is asking KAHS students and staff, as well as members of the Kane community to return the support that the girls show them by attending the Sendoff to Nationals Night on Wednesday at 7:30 at the Kane Middle School.
In the words of Coach Niklaus, “come and see what competitive cheer is all about.  I am pretty sure most of you will be surprised to see what goes into a competitive cheerleading routine.  It isn’t just sitting on the bench and yelling or standing on the sidelines.  Best of all, it is free.”
These girls have spent most of the school year behind the scenes, now it is time for them to take center stage.
