For the past 37 years the American Cancer Society has marked the beginning of spring with Daffodil Days, being celebrated this week from March 15-21. Once again, Northwest Savings Bank is sponsoring the Daffodil Days Campaign. Daffodils are available at the Topps store from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, Save A Lot in St. Marys on Friday and Saturday, BiLo in Ridgway from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and at ShurFine in Johnsonburg from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. “I have truly enjoyed volunteering for the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days,” said Martha Kinkead, Daffodil Days volunteer. “It is a great way to give back to the community while helping the Cancer Society raise money to help in its mission of eliminating cancer as a major health problem.” Elk County volunteers will begin selling and distributing daffodils starting today through Saturday. Anyone interested in assisting with packing, delivering and selling flowers should contact Barb Handwerger at 781-1315, Kelly Imbrogna at 965-4457 or Susan Babik at 1-800-458-3856 ext. 3507. The 2010 campaign marks the addition of Birthdays R. Hope, the sixth in a special Boyds Bear Collection designed exclusively for the ACS Daffodil Days. The bear and a bunch of daffodils is available for $25 while a special edition Daffodil Day vase with 10 flowers is available for a donation of $15 and a bunch of 10 flowers is being sold for $10. Orders may be placed by contacting the ACS at 1-888-227-5445. Last year’s Daffodil Days raised $13,000 in Elk County and $6,000 in Cameron County. In total the campaign raised $3.9 throghout Pennsylvania. The daffodil was chosen by the ACS as it is the first flower of spring and symbolizes hope for cancer patients throughout the community.
