Kane woman waives hearing on more burglary charges
Written by Ted Lutz

A Kane woman has waived her preliminary hearing on 34 more charges linked with a burglary spree last year involving homes of her co-workers, friends and neighbors.

Heidi Lynn Horton, 30, of 129 Birch St., Kane, remains in McKean County Prison in Smethport in lieu of $100,000  cash bail. She was returned to prison Monday after waiving her preliminary hearing before District Judge Michael Kennedy of Kane on the latest charges.

Many of the alleged burglary victims crowded into the court office on Fraley Street, but were not required to testify when Horton signed documents to waive the hearing. She is represented by Bradford attorney Jarrett Smith, according to court information.

The latest charges against Horton include:

•Eight felony counts of burglary.

•Five counts of theft.

•Eight felony counts of criminal trespass.

•Five counts of receiving stolen property.

•Eight counts of criminal mischief.

State Police Trooper Daniel C. Moore filed these charges against Horton, who last September admitted to eight other home burglaries in Kane and Wetmore Township between May and September 2007. The Kane Police Department participated in the investigation leading to Horton's arrest last year.

According to court documents, Horton is accused of these additional burglaries:

•The defendant allegedly entered the home of Gary and Jennifer Ablanalp of 514 Greeves St., Kane, and removed about $476 in change from a child's piggy bank, a coffee can and a glass.

•The defendant allegedly smashed out the rear window of a garage attached to the residence of Gary Zeigler of 23 Laurel Ave. A right thumb print found on a piece of glass was linked with Horton, according to court records.

•The defendant allegedly removed about $170 in change from the residence of Hugh and June Rich of 3 E. Main St., Ludlow.

•The defendant allegedly removed $800 from the residence of Helen Zampogna, 90, of Park Avenue, Kane. According to court documents, Horton asked to see the inside of the Zampogna house "because it looked so nice." Once inside, Horton asked to use the bathroom, court records show. Zampogna even gave the defendant a sewing box as a gift. This box later was recovered in the Horton residence.

•The defendant allegedly entered the Brandon Polaski residence at 405 Pine St., Kane, and removed about $50 in change.

•The defendant is linked with a burglary at the Jon and Yvonne Cannella residence at 335 Pine St., Kane. About $40 was taken in this burglary.

•The defendant allegedly tried to enter the residence of Tommy Dean Hammerbeck of 35 Church St., Ludlow. The defendant allegedly used a tool to pry screens off windows and caused damage when she tried to open locked windows.

•The defendant allegedly used a brick to break the east side window at the Gary Rhodes residence at 32 Gibbs Hill Road, Ludlow, and gain entrance. She failed to break a glass storm door with the brick, court documents show.

Many of the alleged victims in the Horton burglary spree worked with the defendant at Kane Community Hospital or were her friends and neighbors, court documents show. The Cannellas are the parents of Horton's co-worker Jennifer Abplanalp.

Horton allegedly knew June Rich as the mother of Horton's neighbor Jill DeMarte. Horton previously admitted to a burglary at the DeMarte residence.

Polaski is identified as a hairdresser who cuts Horton's hair.

Earlier this month, Horton was sentenced to six months to 23 1/2 months in the county prison for other home burglaries committed last year. She confessed to eight burglaries when she was interviewed by State Police on Sept. 5. She pleaded guilty in county court in January.

When she was sentenced earlier this month, Horton was given credit for 186 days served in the county prison. She also was ordered to pay $1,420 in restitution and court costs, submit to a DNA test and pay $250 for the test and undergo a mental health evaluation.

Although Horton confessed Sept. 5 to eight burglaries, "it was determined that the defendant had committed numerous other burglaries" from May to September, according to court documents.

Police investigation led to the filing of the latest burglary charges against Horton, who is the mother of young twin girls, according to persons familiar with the family.
