A cancer survivor who is married to a Kane native will reach a milestone today as he runs in the Boston Marathon.
Edwin “Win” Apel Jr. of Cranford, N.J. already has participated in 22.6-mile marathons in 49 states. He is marking his 50th state today with the Boston Marathon. He also has run marathons on six different continents in the world.
Apel, 58, is married to the former Lorrie Marconi. She is the oldest of nine children of Jim and Rosella Marconi of 201 Hemlock Ave., Kane.
Apel is the brother-in-law of area residents Ellen Perry and Stacy Lindquist of Kane, Sharlene Marconi of Smethport and the Rev. Ted Marconi, pastor of St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Ridgway.
Several family members, including Rev. Marconi, plan to attend today’s running of the Boston Marathon, the most prestigious long-distance race in the U.S. Apel’s three sons will be traveling to Boston to see their father run today.
Apel is running in today’s event as a member of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Boston Marathon Challenge team.
This is the first time Apel has run for a charity organization that supports cancer research.
Apel was obligated to raise a minimum of $3,000 to receive an invitation to participate in the Boston Marathon with the Dana-Farber team.
“My original goal was $15,000,” Apel said in an e-mail to supporters of his benefit run. He said this was “an astronomical goal, I first thought.”
When the $15,000 goal was met, Apel bumped his target to $20,000.
“Because of your generosity, I have raised over $21,000,” Apel told his backers.
Since he’s a cancer survivor himself and has raised such a huge amount for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Apel has been featured in recent newspaper articles and on local and national radio and television shows.
