MT. JEWETT – The Mt. Jewett Borough Council has awarded its quarterly certificate of appreciation to the “Bits ‘N Pizza” restaurant at 53 W. Main St.
Mt. Jewett Mayor Tom Geer presented the certificate Monday to Cheryl Geer Flickinger, the owner and sole proprietor of the business. She is the mayor’s sister. They are two of 13 children of the late Martin and Edith Geer of Mt. Jewett.
Mary Smith founded the restaurant about 15 years ago. Flickinger purchased the business in August 2001.
According to a statement from Borough Council President Chuck Paar, the restaurant “on average” has six part-time employees. He said the restaurant is open six days a week and features pizza, subs, sandwiches, salads and “famous hamburgers in the tradition of the former ‘Old Ketttle Restaurant’” in Mt. Jewett.
Bits ‘N Pizza offers dining inside the building as well as carryout and delivery service in the “immediate” Mt. Jewett area, Paar said.
According to Paar’s statement, Flickinger is “actively involved” in the Assembly of God Church in Mt. Jewett and is a supporter of the annual Mt. Jewett Swedish Festival and the Mt. Jewett Charter School Coalition. She has been involved with the Mt. Jewettettes drill team and the Cub Scouts, according to Paar.
In other business at the meeting at the Mt. Jewett Memorial Library, council:
*Received notice that the Mt. Jewett Volunteer Fire Department and the Mt. Jewett Ambulance Service are seeking new members. The ambulance service is seeking additional persons to train as emergency medical technicians (EMTs).
*Heard a warning from Mayor Geer that Police Officer Nataliya Miroslavna will be enforcing borough ordinances on junk vehicles and high grass.
*Heard Geer advise residents to refrain from sweeping dirt and anti-skid materials into storm sewers. He still is asking residents to sweep their sidewalks, but doesn’t want the dirt to go into storm sewers where it could clog the drain lines.
*Discussed a proposed dusk-to-dawn curfew at the community park.
*Received notice that the Kaffe Sol restaurant in Mt. Jewett plans to prepare an “appreciation lunch” for borough employees. The date was not announced.
*Discussed an inspection of the borough water system with representatives of the Mt. Jewett Borough Water Authority and the Pennsylvania American Water Co., which has expressed as interest in acquiring the public facility.
Pennsylvania American also is interested in the Mt. Jewett sewage system. Paar said last month that the private company never inquired about buying the sewage system. But he admitted Monday that he had “misspoke” because the company is interested in the sewage system as well as the water system.
“I apologize,” Paar said in reference to his comment at the April meeting.
*Discussed a project to install handicapped-accessible bathrooms at the Mt. Jewett Memorial Library.
The federal community-development program is expected to provide funding for the project.
*Approved a letter to John Archer, who is renovating a building at 61 W. Main St. The borough is giving Archer conditional approval to add landscaping that encroaches on borough property on the west side of the building.
Paar said Archer has already “jumped the gun” and completed the landscaping. Council’s letter simply approves what already has been completed.
