The Elk County Commissioners opened six bids yesterday morning for Johnsonburg's borough sidewalk replacement project and awarded the job to Thompson Diversified, whose low bid came in at $20,892.
With multiple bids for the project, Tracy D. Gerber, who currently works as Community Development Block Grant Coordinator out of the county's planning department, acknowledged the widespread interest.
"This was one of the projects that I've done that I've had the most phone calls and interested contractors," Gerber said. "Thompson Diversified was the low bidder and after speaking with (Johnsonburg Borough Manager) Mary Polaski, everything is in order so we'd like to accept them as the winning bidder for the project."
The elected officials also received a bid from Glass Erectors, Inc., based in Reynoldsville, for Johnsonburg's public library window and glass replacement project.
"For the library window replacement, Glass Erectors was the only bid and we'd like to reject that bid because it is way over our dollar amount," Gerber said of the $36,175 price tag. "We have to review the project and see what we can do.
"We'll re-bid it at a later date and I'll get in contact with them, I'm just not sure when we'll re-bid it."
The commissioners also approved Ridgway Borough's county aid application to assist in bituminous paving.
"They want to do some paving on various borough streets," Elk County Commissioner/Chairman Daniel R. Freeburg said during yesterday morning's meeting. "This is a continuation of our Liquid Fuels monies to the municipalities."
The commissioners also approved a grant application to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency in order to receive grant monies to help offset the costs of the Intermediate Punishment Program.
"This was passed at our prison board meeting (yesterday morning)," Freeburg said.
Elk and Cameron Counties are receiving $10,962 per year.
Submitted this year, it would cover the final year of this grant period starting July 1 to June 30, 2012.
The elected officials also reported that they've received reimbursement for the district attorney's salary for 2007, which serves as supplement payment due to the increase in judicial salaries enacted in Act 44 from 2005.
"We're very happy to report that we've received a check from the Office of Attorney General in Harrisburg that reflects the $10,934 reimbursement for calendar year 2007 from our DA (district attorney's) salary," Freeburg said. "That's certainly good news."
Elk County Commissioner Ronald T. Beimel also expressed his sentiment regarding the overdue reimbursement.
"The only thing I can say on the DA, in that letter, it did say that dollars are being accumulated in the Office of the Attorney General and as soon as sufficient funds are there for the 2008 salary, we will then be reimbursed for that," Beimel said. "A lot of action by our CCAP (County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania) and the Elk County Commissioners and our attorney (Tom Wagner).
"We put them on notice and they did respond, so it's great."
