With proud parents, grandparents and other family members looking on, Kane High School students received awards Friday night at the 13th annual Academic Banquet.
About 300 attended the banquet at the high school gymnasium. The honored students and their family members received their dinners in the cafeteria and returned to the gym to eat their meals at brightly decorated tables.
Following dinner, faculty members and administrators issued awards for academic excellence. Door prizes donated by Kane area businesses also were given out during the 90-minute program.
High School Principal Jeff Kepler said the Academic Banquet is "one of the highlights of the school year." He said the Academic Banquet is a main feature of the year along with commencement and the induction ceremony for the National Honor Society.
"The community support for the Academic Banquet is outstanding," Kepler said.
Barb Kimbrough, who teaches English at the high school, said the Academic Banquet is an opportunity to "recognize student achievement from every field."
She said the fete also provides a chance for parents, grandparents and other family members to "see the students honored."
Kimbrough said the high school faculty puts on the Academic Banquet as "a group effort." She said the teachers and administrators set up for the banquet and clear the gym after the fete.
Daleen Cecchetti, who teaches Spanish at the high school, said the Academic Banquet is "important for the kids."
"They need to know how special they are," she said. Cecchetti said the banquet also gives parents a chance to see their children honored for their academic excellence.
Cecchetti and Kimbrough are among the faculty members who have worked on all 13 banquets.
