MT. JEWETT -- The annual Memorial Day parade and service will be held Monday in Mt. Jewett.
The parade begins at 11 a.m. Monday and will proceed on Main Street (Route 6) from McClellan Avenue west to the Gazebo at the veterans memorial on West Main Street. The service will take place at the Gazebo.
The Kane High School Marching Band will participate in the parade along with participants from the Marine Corps League, the Sons of the American Legion, the Hamlin/Mt. Jewett ball teams, the Mt. Jewetetts, the Mt. Jewett Ambulance Service, the Mt. Jewett Volunteer Fire Department, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, the Swedish Festival queen and the Mt. Jewett Charter School Coalition.
The Rev. Craig Smith will give the invocation. The high school band will play the National Anthem. Paul Swanson will welcome the guests and speakers.
Mayor Tom Geer will recite "General Logan's Order No. 11." Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on May 30, 1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
Don Warren will serve as the parade marshal.
Lt. Col. Lisa A. Forsyth, a 1983 graduate of Kane Area High School, will deliver the Memorial Day address. She is the daughter of Ellen Forsyth of 19 Anderson St., Mt. Jewett, and the late Jerry Forsyth. Lt. Col. Forsyth is based at the Pentagon.
Among those taking part in the service are Mike Wennerstrom, commander of the VFW; Jack Geer, commander of the American Legion; Dan Counts, commandant of the Marine Corps League; and Norma Jean Barnhart, president of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Names of deceased veterans will be read. Memorial wreaths will be placed at the monument.
The Rev. Cam Mealy of the Assembly of God Church in Mt. Jewett will give the benediction.
Following the parade and Memorial Day service, a public open house will be held at the Mt. Jewett Veterans Memorial Club on East Main Street.
