Work is under way on the installation of a new eight-inch water main on Hemlock Avenue in Kane.
The Pennsylvania American Water Company, which provides water service to Kane, is replacing a four-inch cast-iron water main that was originally installed in 1899.
Mealy Excavating and Construction of Tionesta is the contractor for the project.
Due to the work, traffic flow on Hemlock Avenue is restricted to one-lane. “Flaggers” are posted at both ends of the construction zone to control traffic.
Tim Mague of Kane, the field operations supervisor for Pennsylvania American Water, said the new line would run about 1,560 feet along Hemlock Avenue from South Fraley Street to Pennsylvania Avenue.
“It’s a typical main replacement project that we have each year,” Mague said.
Mague said Pennsylvania American Water plans similar projects in Kane every year to “upgrade the system and reduce the number of water-main breaks.”
The new line is being installed about three feet from the edge of the curb. The trench for the new line is between the curb and the sidewalk on Hemlock Avenue.
