'Zero Sort' increases recycling loads in Kane

June 18, 2012

Photo by Ted Lutz – Casella Waste Systems has six bins for "zero sort" recyclables at a site near the skate/bike ramps at Glenwood Park in Kane. Residents are encouraged to place their aluminum cans, paper, cardboard and plastic bottles in any of the bins. These trash items do not need to be separated before they are placed in the bins.

The "Zero Sort" program offered by Casella Waste Systems has led to a 30-percent increase in recycling in Kane, a company spokesman said Monday.
Stephanie Runser, the general manager of the Olean, N.Y. Hauling Division that includes company bins in Kane, Smethport and Bradford, said "Zero Sort" is popular because residents no longer need to separate their recyclables.
She said Kane area residents are encouraged to deposit plastic bottles, aluminum cans, cardboard and paper in any one of the six recycling bins in Kane.
The bins again are located near the skate/bike ramps at Glenwood Park on Hacker Street (Route 321) in Kane. The bins had been moved for the winter months to the parking lot at the former Chestnut Street Elementary School in Kane.
Runser said "zero sort" also has resulted in a 40-percent increase in recycling in Smethport and a 34-percent increase in recycling in Bradford.
Casella trucks are scheduled to empty the Kane bins every Tuesday and Friday, Runser said. When the bins are filled to capacity, she is asking residents to haul their recyclables back home and return after the bins have been emptied.
According to Runser, Casella has four 10-cubic-yard bins in Kane and two six-cubic-yard bins. Her calculations indicate that the company is removing 102 cubic yards of recyclables in Kane every week.
