The Kane Zoning Hearing Board has cleared the way for the sale of the former Chestnut Street Elementary School to Kane Manufacturing.
Acting at a meeting Wednesday, the board approved a "special exception for 'mixed use'" at the former school.
Ed Peterson, chairman of the board, voted in favor of the request along with Vice Chairman Joe Stauffer and board member Todd Klaiber.
Norm Schreckengost and Diane Niklas, two other board members, did not attend the meeting. Mike Woods, listed as an alternate member, also was absent.
Kane Manufacturing-- also known as Kane Screens-- plans to convert the upper level of the former school into offices.
Michael Carpenter, controller for the company, said the offices would serve engineers, sales staff and project managers.
Kane Manufacturing, which has operated a production facility in Kane since 1890, purchased the property earlier this year with a high bid of $100,002.
Carpenter said "three or four classrooms" on the upper floor would be converted into offices at this time.
The "mixed use" given by the zoning board will allow the company to rent the lower level to existing tenants.
The lower level now is used by children's programs-- Head Start, the Intermediate Unit 9 (IU-9) and the Kids After School Program (KASP) linked with the Lutheran Home at Kane.
The Kane school wrestlers also have a special practice room on the lower level.
IU-9, a consortium of area school districts, and Head Start are not directly connected to the Kane school system.
Carpenter said the Kane midget football teams would be allowed to practice on the recreational field on the property.
The sale of the former school will put the property on the tax rolls.
