Wilcox woman named ‘interim’ director of Bradford airport

MT. ALTON—When she began work in the office at the Bradford Regional Airport nearly 10 years ago, Alicia Dankesreiter never dreamed she would someday lead the airport’s day-to-day operation.
But, due to a sudden decision by the airport authority, Dankesreiter now is the “interim” administrative leader at the airfield on Route 59 in Mt. Alton.
The nine-member airport authority decided Wednesday to immediately terminate Tom Frungillo of Olean, N.Y. as the airport manager. He has held the position since 1998.

Bradford doctor sentenced to probation for groping women

SMETHPORT – A Bradford doctor who pleaded guilty to groping two young married women in his medical office has been sentenced to probation for 23 1/2 months.
McKean County Court President Judge John Pavlock handed down the sentence Thursday for Dr. Abaz Sosic, 51.
Because of the nature of the charges, Sosic will be registered on the state’s Megan’s Law list of sexual offenders. He will remain on the list for 15 years, according to an agreement finalized Thursday.

Kane-based State Police post flyers on cop-killer

LANTZ CORNERS – The Kane-based State Police barracks on Route 219 near Lantz Corners has posted "wanted" flyers for the alleged cop-killer in the town of Blooming Grove.
Police are seeking Eric Matthew Frein, a 31-year-old man wanted in slaying of State Police Corporal Bryon Dickson during a shift change last Friday night.
Frein is described as a white male who is 6-foot-1 and weighs 165 pounds. The suspect has brown hair and blue eyes.
State Police said Frein is considered "armed and dangerous."

Two more charged in heroin sting

Two more local residents have been charged in connection with the heroin trafficking bust that occurred Monday at 131 Hemlock Rd.
Aaron Christopher Johnson, 27, of 160 Country Ln., Kersey, and Kayla Ann Gillen, 24, of 122 Bennett Rd., St. Marys, were incarcerated at Elk County Prison Wednesday. They each face felony charges related to the sale and distribution of heroin.

Panel begins work to update county solid waste plan

SMETHPORT – Work is underway to update the McKean County Municipal Solid Waste Management Plan.
The 11-member county Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC) held its first meeting Wednesday evening at the county 911 Emergency Communications Center on Route 6 near Smethport.

Debriefing allows for input on shooting hoax

Rumors and conspiracy theorists ideas have run rampant over the school shooting hoax which took place at St. Marys Area High School on Sept. 2.
When contacted Wednesday for follow-up details on the hoax, which prompted a massive police response from Elk, Clearfield and McKean counties, St. Marys Chief of Police Todd Caltagarone said no new information was available.
Caltagarone reconfirmed the identity of the caller as a nine-year-old juvenile who will not face criminal charges.

SMETHPORT – A Kane woman will spend more than 11 years in state prison as the admitted at-fault driver in a head-on collision that killed six persons last year on Route 219 near Lantz Corners.
Speaking Tuesday morning prior to her sentencing in McKean County Court in Smethport, Kathy Douglas, 37, of Kane said “I take responsibility for my actions” in the crash that killed her 12-year-old daughter, Olivia, her 6-year-old nephew, Jarrett Costanzo of Kane and four members of a close-knit St. Marys family.

Heroin traffickers arrested in St. Marys

Four suspects have been arrested in connection with heroin trafficking and placed in Elk County Prison as a result of an investigation conducted by the City Police and the Attorney General's office.
Officers, agents and members of the North Central Drug Task Force served a search warrant shortly after 6 p.m. Monday at 131 Hemlock Rd. where a large amount of heroin and drug paraphernalia was seized.

Campbell highlights progress at local hospital

Rose Campbell, president of Penn Highlands Elk, provided a progress update to county officials Tuesday morning regarding the expansion of the healthcare facility.
"We've had some very good things happening recently and through our recruitment team we've added several physicians to our staff," she said. "Things have been very well received thus far. Both Dr. Gorlowski and Dr. Ali have connected so they'll have good pediatric support for our area.
"We're looking for opportunities to position them in other communities as well, so once we get Dr. Tosh here, we'll figure that out."

Kane Blight Committee plans demolition projects

The Kane Blight Committee is planning demolition projects-- starting with a fire-damaged building at 318 Chase St.
The committee is under the Kane Area Revitalization Enterprise (KARE), which is a division of the Kane Area Development Center headed by Erin Vassallo.
"KARE has held fundraisers and will continue to do so to benefit blight removal and other ongoing community projects," Vassallo said. She said the Kane Rotary Club has allocated $20,000 to the blight fight in Kane.

Ludlow memorial to be dedicated on Veterans’ Day

LUDLOW – The new Veterans Memorial for Hamilton Township will be dedicated on Veterans’ Day—Tuesday, Nov. 11.
State, county and local officials have been invited to participate in the dedication ceremony at 11 a.m.
The memorial is located near the rear gate at the Wetmore Road entrance to Wildcat Park in Ludlow.
The memorial features 652 memorial bricks, a large monument and flagpoles for the flying of the American, state and POW/MIA flags. Benches will be added.

Defendants seek legal fees from school chief in Kane

ERIE – Three defendants in a “whistle-blower” lawsuit filed seven years ago in U.S. District Court in Erie are seeking to have their legal fees paid by the unsuccessful plaintiff—Dr. Maryann Anderson, superintendent of the Kane Area School District.
The defendants’ legal fees total nearly $3 million, according a report in the Saturday edition of the Erie Times-News.

4 used computers donated to Kane Day School

The Kane School Board agreed Thursday to donate four used school district computers to the Kane Day School, a pre-school program.
Linda Hearst of the Kane Day School made the request, which was endorsed by school board members John Ball, Dick Coleman, Claire Ann Depto, Tom Kerek, Susan Grolemund and Linda A. Anderson.
Board members Keith Hastings and Krista Jamerson did not attend the meeting. There is one vacancy on the nine-member board. Anderson participated in the meeting via speaker phone.

Kane woman accepts plea deal in 6-fatality crash

September 11, 2014

SMETHPORT – A Kane woman charged in a horrific 6-fatality traffic accident last year has accepted a plea agreement that suggests a minimum sentence of 11 1/2 years in prison.
Kathy Douglas, 37, entered the plea Thursday before Senior Judge William F. Morgan at the McKean County Courthouse.
The judge set sentencing for Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the courthouse. Morgan said he as the "sentencing judge" is not bound by the proposed terms in the agreement, which sets the maximum sentence of 22 1/2 years.
