Memorial Day programs set Monday in Kane area

Memorial Day parades and programs are scheduled Monday in the Kane area.
Events are set in Kane, Mt. Jewett and Ludlow.
The annual Memorial Day parade in Kane begins at 9:30 a.m. Units will form at 9 a.m. on Wetmore Avenue. The parade will proceed south on Fraley Street through the Uptown Business District.
The parade will end at the memorial "point" area at Evergreen Park at South Fraley, Chestnut and Birch streets.

'Green Team' oversees recycling at Kane High School

Students and staff members at Kane Area High School are doing their part to recycle waste.
Under the supervision of the student "Green Team," the school is recycling paper, aluminum cans and plastic and glass bottles.
Containers for the items have been placed throughout the high school. The "Green Team" hauls the recyclables to "zero sort" bins adjacent to the school parking lot. Advanced Disposal picks up the bins.
Clayton Colson, a high school senior, is the chairman of the six-member "Green Team" which oversees the recycling program.

Child Safety Fair held at Kane’s Evergreen Park

Overcast skies didn’t dampen the spirits of the area youth who attended Thursday afternoon’s Child Safety Fair. The Kane Area Development Center sponsored the free event which was held at Evergreen Park , between the Enchanted Playground and the basketball court from 2-5 p.m.
A number of local agencies set up information booths at the park and many had items free for children or games to play. KADC employees manned a welcome table and offered free hot dogs, courtesy of Texas Hot, and face-painting.

Kane teacher to speak at Memorial Day program

Kane High School teacher Josh Jekielek will deliver the keynote speech Monday at the annual Memorial Day program at Evergreen Park in Kane.
The program at the memorial "point" at the park follows the parade at 9:30 a.m. Monday. Kane Mayor "Yogi" Osmer is the master-of-ceremonies.
Jekielek, who teaches English language arts at the high school, currently serves in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve with the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class.

Election winner fills Hamlin Township board vacancy

HAZEL HURST – A day after winning the Republican nomination for a six-year term as Hamlin Township supervisor, Jim Myers was chosen to fill a vacancy on the Board of Supervisors.
Myers, owner of a trucking company on Route 6 just west of Mt. Jewett, will fill a vacancy created by the April resignation of Supervisor Joni Britton.
Acting at a special meeting Wednesday, Supervisors Jim Trussell and Dave Okerlund endorsed Myers for the position. 
He is expected to be sworn in by Kane District Court Judge Dave Engman in time to take part in the June 8 regular meeting of the supervisors.

Joey Marold of Kane attains rank of Eagle Scout

The highest rank in Boy Scouting, the Eagle Scout Award, has been awarded to Joey Marold of Troop 422 in Kane. Troop 422 is led by Scoutmaster Bob Ishman and is chartered by Olmsted Manor in Ludlow and the First United Methodist Church in Kane.
Joey participated in his Eagle Scout Board of Review on March 8 and was congratulated immediately afterward for attaining this coveted rank.

Police name 1 passenger in Kane Stone crash

According to a State Police report released Wednesday, Michael Butterfield, 18, is one of three Kane teens injured Tuesday afternoon in an accident.
Their car went off a cliff on Reigel Road at the area known as Kane Stone in Wetmore Township.
Police said Butterfield sustained a "minor injury" in the accident. He was wearing a seat belt, police said.
Police did not name the 17-year-old female driver and a 17-year-old female passenger due to their age.
Police said the 17-year-old female passenger sustained a "moderate injury." She was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

New local air service is soaring above 2014 levels

LAFAYETTE TOWNSHIP – Sun Air Express, the new commuter passenger carrier at the Bradford Regional Airport, is gaining in popularity.
Sun Air in April had 204 passengers departing on its flights to the Pittsburgh International Airport. 
This total is 18 more than the same month in 2014 when Silver Airways (United) served the airport with flights to Cleveland.
In a report Wednesday at a meeting of the Airport Authority, Sun Air Bradford Station Manager Ryan Dach said the number of departing passengers so far this month is "ahead of April."

3 Kane teens injured as car plunges over cliff

Three Kane teenagers were injured Tuesday afternoon when their car went off Reigel Road and plunged over a cliff.
State Police investigated the accident, but had not filed a report as of late Tuesday night.
According to police at the scene, the injured included two 17-year-old girls and an 18-year-old male.

Challenger defeats incumbent in DA race

May 20, 2015

SMETHPORT – Challenger Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer apparently has eked out a narrow victory over incumbent Ray Learn for the Republican nomination for McKean County district attorney.
According to unofficial results, Shaffer of Bradford won by 221 votes by a margin of 2,471-2,250 over Learn of Smethport.
No one sought the Democratic nomination for DA.

8 lose water for unpaid Kane sewer bills

May 18, 2015

Water service has been shut off to eight customers with long-term unpaid Kane sewer bills.
The water shutoffs are the last straw in efforts to collect delinquent sewer bills.
There are 2,074 sewer customers in Kane and Wetmore Township.
A total of 97 water shutoffs were scheduled last month for failure to pay lengthy delinquent sewer bills.
These "deadbeats" owed a total of $34,785 in unpaid sewer bills.

Kane Zoning Board OKs lighted business sign

May 18, 2015

The Kane Zoning Hearing Board agreed Monday to permit a lighted outdoor sign at Rice's Small Engine Repair Shop at 210 S. Fraley St. at East Hemlock Avenue.
Board members Dave "Norm" Schreckengost, Dianna Niklas, Mike Woods and Lowell Watts approved the sign request from Jerry Rice, owner of the business.
Todd Klaiber, the fifth zoning board member, abstained from voting to avoid a conflict. He is related to Rice and the Rev. Milton Jones, owner of the site of the business.

The ballot facing McKean County voters Tuesday in the primary election features several races for key county positions.
The competitive county races include:
*Two Republican nominations for county commissioner.
*The Republican nomination for district attorney.
*The Republican nomination for sheriff.
*The Republican nomination for register of wills/clerk of the orphan's court.
