Kane businesses asked to show concern for students

March 3, 2015

Kane parents and teachers regularly show concern for their children and students by stressing the importance of education.
Employees at local businesses are now being asked to echo this message by conversing with students who enter their stores.
The Community Involvement Team (CIT) at the Kane Elementary School has sent letters to more than 70 Kane businesses to “ask them to become involved with showing students” the importance of education.

Bradford man runs for county commissioner

BRADFORD – Don Cummins of Bradford has announced his candidacy for the position of McKean County commissioner.
He is seeking the Republican nomination in the May 19 primary election.
Cummins has held the position of Bradford Township supervisor and has served as the chairman of the Board of Supervisors. He currently serves as chairman of the Bradford Township Planning Commission.

Ken Stroup runs for Hamlin Twp. supervisor

HAZEL HURST – Ken Stroup of Lindholm Road has announced that he is seeking the Republican nomination for supervisor in Hamlin Township.
He is filing nominating petitions for both a two-year term and a six-year term. He is seeking the Republican nomination for both terms up for election this year.

Highland supervisors: We're fighting the lawsuit

The Highland Township supervisors voted unanimously on Monday to allow The Community Environmental Defense Fund (CELDF) to proceed in defending the township in a lawsuit over a township ordinance regulating injection wells.
The decision came after a 30-minute public meeting in which the township supervisors and approximately 25 residents of the township and the county were able to voice their opinion on what should be done with the lawsuit.

Mt. Jewett to ask townships to hike fire department aid

MT. JEWETT – Officials in Mt. Jewett plan to ask Hamlin Township and Sergeant Township to boost financial aid for the borough fire department.
Mt. Jewett Borough Council President Chuck Paar said Monday that it's time for the borough to "ask for an increase" in aid from the two townships.
Speaking at a meeting of the borough council, Paar said 38 percent of the Mt. Jewett Volunteer Fire Department calls are in the western half of Hamlin Township near Lantz Corners. He said the Mt. Jewett firefighters also respond to many calls in Sergeant Township-- especially in the Hutchins area.

Carving event ends with Saturday auction

RIDGWAY – The weeklong sweet 16th birthday celebration of the Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous reached its high note Saturday with the annual auction attended by a large crowd.
Auctioneers auctioned off a wide variety of artistic creations throughout Saturday at the annual event on Court Street in downtown Ridgway.
Attendees had a chance through the week to see world class carvers in action in addition to informative seminars throughout the week.

Public invited to Lenten drama at Kane church

A dramatic presentation-- "The People vs. Judas Iscariot"-- is being held on five Tuesday evenings in Lent at the Presbyterian Church of Kane at Greeves and Chase streets.
The second of five programs is set Tuesday, March 3. 
A Pot Luck dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. in the lower level Fellowship Hall at the church. The half-hour drama begins at 6:30 p.m. at the same site.
The public is welcome.

Fire destroys Straub maintenance building

A fire Friday morning broke out on the Straub Brewery property in St. Marys and destroyed a structure utilized as a maintenance and storage building.
Elk Company 1 (Crystal Fire Department) and St. Marys Ambulance were dispatched at 9:16 a.m. for a report of a structure fire at a commercial industry site at 303 Sorg St. in St. Marys.
"Upon arrival we found that the maintenance storage building was fully involved so at that time we called for mutual aid from Fox Township, Ridgway and Johnsonburg," said Tom Bauer, public relations representative for Crystal Fire Department.

Ridgway youth stays positive despite cancer diagnosis

As 12-year-old Chloe Frank of Ridgway fights the battle of her life, she is armed with a positive attitude, the power of prayer and an outpouring of community support as her weapons.
“She has deep strength which comes from her passion and love of dance," said her mother, Tara Frank.
The Frank family was devastated by their eldest daughter's diagnosis of childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on Sunday, Feb. 16.

Highland supervisor says: lawsuit could ‘bankrupt us’

JAMES CITY – A federal lawsuit filed by Seneca Resources against Highland Township over the “injection well’ controversy “has the potential to bankrupt us.”
This is the opinion of Jim Wolfe, chairman of the Highland Township Board of Supervisors.
Wolfe said Thursday that the board has called a special meeting Monday to discuss the lawsuit with township residents. The public meeting is set for 7 p.m. at the township building in James City.

Engine fire destroys parked car in Kane

February 26, 2015

A fire that erupted in an engine Thursday destroyed a car parked adjacent to a residence at 426 Biddle St. (Route 6) in Kane.
Fire Chief Tim Holt said no injuries were reported in the blaze that destroyed a 1998 Oldsmobile 88 owned by Jessie Mae Bucher. He said there is "not much left" of the fire-damaged vehicle.
The cause of the fire is unknown, Holt said.
The owner of the vehicle resides at 428 Biddle St., but parks her car in a parking space adjacent to the residence of her daughter, Brenda Aponte.

Police advise parents to monitor kids’ phone, internet use

Parents of Kane school students need to be “diligent and observant” as they monitor their children’s activity on cellphones and the internet.
This is the advice from State Police Trooper Bruce A. Morris, the featured speaker at a public meeting Thursday evening at the Kane Middle School auditorium.
Morris is the area State Police Community Services Officer based at the State Police station in Ridgway.

Support sought for trail from Mt. Jewett to state park

MT. JEWETT – Support is being sought for a proposed 3.9-mile trail from Mt. Jewett to the Kinzua Bridge State Park.
The trail would run over the corridor for the defunct Knox and Kane Railroad, which featured a tourist train ride to the park.
Carolyn Stroup and Karen Sees-- neighbors on Lindholm Road in Hamlin Township-- are attempting to form a volunteer organization to develop and maintain the proposed trail.
They presided Wednesday at a 105-minute public meeting at the Mt. Jewett Fire Hall.

3 counties offer support of regional rail authority

RIDGWAY – The counties of Elk, Clearfield and Jefferson have all adopted non-binding resolutions in support of the creation of a regional rail authority, according to North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission Executive Director Eric Bridges.
The possibility of creating a regional rail authority has become a reoccurring topic at North Central meetings after as the organization is looking into having a part in the restoration of 20 miles of railroad between Curwensville and DuBois.

North Central hears audit presentation

RIDGWAY – Representatives from North Central's auditing firm attended Wednesday's executive committee meeting to give a presentation on the audit that was completed for North Central for the 2013-2014 fiscal year.
Baker Tilly, the company contracted by the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission to complete the organization's audits, sent Karen Larsen, Baker Tilly partner, and Adam Hartzel, senior manager at Baker Tilly, to Wednesday's meeting to speak about the process and results relating to the most recent audit.
