KVFD Auxiliary Welcomes Two New Members

The Kane Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary held its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, August 6, 2014. Nine auxiliary members attended the meeting, during which they welcomed two new members to the organization, Angie Pease and Jessica Szymanski. Another prospective member’s application was read and will be voted on during the September meeting.

County approves payment for Kane paving project

SMETHPORT – The McKean County Board of Commissioners has approved a payment for the Kane borough paving project.
Acting at their meeting Tuesday, Commissioners Joe DeMott, Al Pingie and Cliff Lane authorized a payment of $7,562 for the Kane project. The payment represents the borough’s share of county liquid fuel tax revenue.
The borough also allocated $35,000 in state liquid fuel tax revenue for the project that cost nearly $140,000. The borough budgeted about $97,000 for the project.

Local pilot recreating America’s first fighter

In the spring of 1918, the newly formed American Expeditionary Force’s First Pursuit Group began combat operations in Villenueve, France in support of the Allied Nations defense of Western Europe from German aggression. Soon to be famous American aces such as Rickenbacker, Lufberry, Hall and others were preparing to write their names into the annals of aviation history. WWI was in its fifth and final year and the outlook was uncertain.

Charges bound over to county court after hearings in Kane

Charges in two separate criminal cases have been bound over to McKean County Court following preliminary hearings Monday in Kane District Court.
Kane District Court Judge Dave Engman sent the cases to county court after hearing testimony in two lengthy hearings.
Kristjan Whiteway, assistant county district attorney, was the prosecutor for the hearings. Smethport attorney Jim Miller served as the court-appointed public defender in the two cases.

Classes to resume Tuesday with a shorter school day

With the “extended” school day in Kane scrapped, students will spend less time in school when classes resume Tuesday.
Classes for children in kindergarten through second grade now will begin at 8:10 a.m. and conclude at 2:30 p.m.
For students in grades 3 through 8, classes now will begin at 8:10 a.m. and conclude at 2:50 p.m.
High school students in grades 9-12 will begin classes at 8:05 a.m. and end the school day at 2:45 p.m.

Ludlow teen killed in crash

HAMILTON TWP. – A 17-year-old Ludlow teen was fatally injured during a crash that occurred at 5:44 p.m. on Saturday evening, Aug. 23, in the area of 623 Gibbs Hill Rd., Hamilton Township, McKean County.
The Kane-based state police report that Dylan Ross Yasurek, 18, of Ludlow, was operating a 2001 Ford Ranger XLT on Gibbs Hill Rd. and transporting two passengers, Tristan Scott Sauers, 17, of Ludlow, and a known 15-year-old female of Endeavor.

Kane firemen battle fire in garage

The Kane Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire early Friday morning in a garage on Highland Road, Wetmore Township.
Fire Chief Tim Holt said the fire erupted in a 1997 Ford Explorer parked inside a three-stall garage at the John and Sara Halquist residence at 6834 Highland Road, not far from Old Mill Road.
The chief said the firemen "saved" the garage, which measures 48x36 feet. He said the fire destroyed the vehicle. The cause has not been determined, the chief said. The fire was confined to the vehicle, the chief said.

Mary Hosmer helping to restore Young Forest to Northern Pa.

As a long time hunter, Mary Hosmer recognizes the connection between the loss of habitat and the loss of the game species she loves.  Tackling this issue head-on, Mary has worked tirelessly to create high-quality Young Forest habitat for the last fifteen years.  “I always told myself when I retired that I was going to do all I could to help restore Young Forest to northern Pennsylvania.  Young Forest habitat has undergone a 70% decline in the last 30 years across the eastern United States, and Pennsylvania mirrors that decline. As a hunter, you feel it in the loss of game.”

Gary Ziegler resigns seat on Kane School Board

Gary Ziegler has resigned from the Kane School Board.
The surprise announcement came earlier this week in a letter to the school board.
"I am choosing to resign from my position on the Kane Area School District Board of Directors effective immediately," Ziegler said in his letter. "I do not have the desire to continue serving as a director."
Ziegler is the fifth member of the volunteer nine-member school board to resign in the past eight months.

Fundraiser is set for mission trip

PORT ALLEGANY-- Jenna Martin, a 2005 graduate of Port Allegany High school, will leave in September for a year-long Mission Trip, referred to as “The World Race” by "Adventures in Missions." the Atlanta based church-affiliated mission group that organizes and facilitates such opportunities for interested young people.

The Kane Volunteer Fire Department responded to a mutual aid call at 5 a.m. Thursday at the Sheffield Fire Hall.
Engine 56 and nine firefighters responded to the call.
The Kane firefighters were asked to "stand by" in Sheffield while Sheffield firefighters assisted at a fire in Clarendon.

Ground is broken for center at Kinzua Bridge State Park

MT. JEWETT – "It's a red-letter day in McKean County."
This is the message from Linda Devlin, who joined with state dignitaries Thursday in the ground-breaking ceremony for the long-awaited Visitors Center at the Kinzua Bridge State Park near Mt. Jewett.
Devlin, executive director of the Bradford-based Allegheny National Forest (ANF) Visitors Bureau, has played a major role in building state and local support for the project.

Search fails to locate man

August 20, 2014

A search Sunday in the area of Glenwood Park in Kane failed to locate a possible missing man.
The Kane Police Department and the Kane Volunteer Fire Department conducted the search from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
About 20 volunteer firefighters took part in the search, Kane Fire Chief Tim Holt said.

Several criminal cases filed in Kane District Court

Several criminal cases have been filed in Kane District Court.
Information on the following cases is from official court documents.
*Branden Michael Doty, 19, of 311 W. Main St., Smethport, is charged with theft and receiving stolen property for allegedly taking a video game and headset valued at $100.
The victim is listed as Chad Allen Luff. The alleged theft took place Saturday at 149097 Route 6 in Hamlin Township.
State Police Trooper Andy Dalton filed the charges, which include criminal trespass. The defendant allegedly entered a private road owned by Foster Township.
