Final payment made to PENNVEST for sewer project

A final payment has been made for one of the loans for a 1994 project to reconstruct the two Kane sewage treatment plants.
The last $25,000 monthly payment has been made to the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST).
Ed Sleeman, the non-voting treasurer of the Kane Borough Sewer Authority, reported on the final PENNVEST payment Monday at a board meeting at the borough building.
The authority for the past 20 years has been making $25,000 monthly payments to PENNVEST for the loan for the sewer project.

10th annual Fall Festival set Oct. 4 at Wildcat Park

LUDLOW – The 10th annual Fall Festival is scheduled Saturday, Oct. 4 at Wildcat Park off Route 6 near Ludlow.
The festival is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is free.
The festival features numerous craft vendors set up at the large pavilion at the park. The festival also includes a bake sale, a quilt drawing and a Chinese Auction.
Food will be served in the pavilion closest to the park entrance on Route 6.
Children and adults also will be able to ride a hay wagon at the park.
Proceeds from the festival benefits the Ludlow Community Association.

1st Lt. Turner returns to family after 6 decades

GROVE TWP. – It was a bittersweet day Saturday as family members, friends, dignitaries and military members paid their respects to U.S. Air Force First Lieutenant William "Bill" Turner.
Turner, who grew up in Cameron and Potter counties, died Nov. 22, 1952 at just 24 years old when the C-124 Globemaster plane that he was traveling in crashed into Mount Gannet in the Chugach Mountains of Alaska.
Severe weather at the time prevented any search from being executed until three days after the crash; aircraft and sea vessels searched for three days before plane wreckage was found Nov. 28, 1952.

District governor welcomed to Rotary meeting

MT. JEWETT – Mt. Jewett Rotary Club President Larry Doyon and other Rotary Club Members welcomed Ruzhdi Bakalli, Rotary District Governor 7280 to a recent meeting of the Mt. Jewett Rotary Club.
Ruzhdi was born and raised in Gjakova, in the Republic of Kosova. In 2000 he founded the Rotary Club of Gjakova. Because of this and efforts of fellow Rotarians, Kosova has 11 additional Chartered Rotary Clubs. Ruzhdi and his wife currently reside in Warren are both members of the Warren Rotary club. Ruzhdi is President of PCED Inc., a non-profit economic development organization.

Public input is sought in search for school superintendent

Public input is sought to help guide the Kane School Board in its search for a new district superintendent.
Residents are urged to complete a survey found on the Kane Area School District website on the internet. Oct. 1 is the deadline for answering a series of questions and submitting the survey electronically.
Wayne LeClair, a senior school services consultant with the Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA), said Friday that the survey results would be provided to the Kane School Board as it moves forward in its search for a new superintendent.

Wilcox woman named ‘interim’ director of Bradford airport

MT. ALTON—When she began work in the office at the Bradford Regional Airport nearly 10 years ago, Alicia Dankesreiter never dreamed she would someday lead the airport’s day-to-day operation.
But, due to a sudden decision by the airport authority, Dankesreiter now is the “interim” administrative leader at the airfield on Route 59 in Mt. Alton.
The nine-member airport authority decided Wednesday to immediately terminate Tom Frungillo of Olean, N.Y. as the airport manager. He has held the position since 1998.

Bradford doctor sentenced to probation for groping women

SMETHPORT – A Bradford doctor who pleaded guilty to groping two young married women in his medical office has been sentenced to probation for 23 1/2 months.
McKean County Court President Judge John Pavlock handed down the sentence Thursday for Dr. Abaz Sosic, 51.
Because of the nature of the charges, Sosic will be registered on the state’s Megan’s Law list of sexual offenders. He will remain on the list for 15 years, according to an agreement finalized Thursday.

Kane-based State Police post flyers on cop-killer

LANTZ CORNERS – The Kane-based State Police barracks on Route 219 near Lantz Corners has posted "wanted" flyers for the alleged cop-killer in the town of Blooming Grove.
Police are seeking Eric Matthew Frein, a 31-year-old man wanted in slaying of State Police Corporal Bryon Dickson during a shift change last Friday night.
Frein is described as a white male who is 6-foot-1 and weighs 165 pounds. The suspect has brown hair and blue eyes.
State Police said Frein is considered "armed and dangerous."

Two more charged in heroin sting

Two more local residents have been charged in connection with the heroin trafficking bust that occurred Monday at 131 Hemlock Rd.
Aaron Christopher Johnson, 27, of 160 Country Ln., Kersey, and Kayla Ann Gillen, 24, of 122 Bennett Rd., St. Marys, were incarcerated at Elk County Prison Wednesday. They each face felony charges related to the sale and distribution of heroin.

Panel begins work to update county solid waste plan

SMETHPORT – Work is underway to update the McKean County Municipal Solid Waste Management Plan.
The 11-member county Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC) held its first meeting Wednesday evening at the county 911 Emergency Communications Center on Route 6 near Smethport.

Debriefing allows for input on shooting hoax

Rumors and conspiracy theorists ideas have run rampant over the school shooting hoax which took place at St. Marys Area High School on Sept. 2.
When contacted Wednesday for follow-up details on the hoax, which prompted a massive police response from Elk, Clearfield and McKean counties, St. Marys Chief of Police Todd Caltagarone said no new information was available.
Caltagarone reconfirmed the identity of the caller as a nine-year-old juvenile who will not face criminal charges.

Kane woman is sentenced to prison for 6-fatality crash

SMETHPORT – A Kane woman will spend more than 11 years in state prison as the admitted at-fault driver in a head-on collision that killed six persons last year on Route 219 near Lantz Corners.
Speaking Tuesday morning prior to her sentencing in McKean County Court in Smethport, Kathy Douglas, 37, of Kane said “I take responsibility for my actions” in the crash that killed her 12-year-old daughter, Olivia, her 6-year-old nephew, Jarrett Costanzo of Kane and four members of a close-knit St. Marys family.
