Search fails to locate man

August 20, 2014

A search Sunday in the area of Glenwood Park in Kane failed to locate a possible missing man.
The Kane Police Department and the Kane Volunteer Fire Department conducted the search from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
About 20 volunteer firefighters took part in the search, Kane Fire Chief Tim Holt said.

Several criminal cases filed in Kane District Court

Several criminal cases have been filed in Kane District Court.
Information on the following cases is from official court documents.
*Branden Michael Doty, 19, of 311 W. Main St., Smethport, is charged with theft and receiving stolen property for allegedly taking a video game and headset valued at $100.
The victim is listed as Chad Allen Luff. The alleged theft took place Saturday at 149097 Route 6 in Hamlin Township.
State Police Trooper Andy Dalton filed the charges, which include criminal trespass. The defendant allegedly entered a private road owned by Foster Township.

IU-9 pre-school program is underway in Kane

Classes in the Kane Area School District won't resume until Tuesday.
But the IU-9 pre-school program-- now located in a vacant classroom at the Kane Elementary School-- already is underway.
A total of 24 area children between the ages of 3 and 5 attend the pre-school program, which features a morning session from 7:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and an afternoon session from 11:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. There are 12 children in the morning session and 12 children in the afternoon session.

Woman is burned in gas grill fire in Kane

A Kane woman sustained minor burns Tuesday afternoon when she attempted to douse a grease-fed fire in a propane gas grill.
Jackie Cecchetti suffered burns on both forearms as she tried to put out the fire in the grill on the wooden deck at the rear of her residence at 228 Holman St., Kane.

Sheriff Krieg announces upcoming resignation

RIDGWAY – The Elk County Courthouse will see a shift as 2014 winds down as two-term Elk County Sheriff Jeff Krieg will not serve out his final year at the helm and will instead retire.
Krieg's decision, kept largely under wraps for the duration of the year, was initially made as far back as January.

Kane hospital again honored for electronic link

Kane Community Hospital (KCH) has been recognized with the “Most Wired—Small and Rural” award for the seventh time. 
KCH is affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC)-- Hamot Medical Center in Erie.
A hospital is considered "small" and "rural" based on having fewer of 100 beds and located outside a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) as designated by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB). 
Organizations such as KCH, not recognized on the primary Most Wired lis, are included in the Most Wired—Small and Rural category.

Civil War encampment is slated in Ludlow

LUDLOW – A Civil War encampment will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday-- Sept. 19-21-- at Wildcat Park near Ludlow.
More than 20 individuals dressed as Union soldiers will actually camp out in tents for two nights in the ball field area at the rustic park along Route 6 just east of Ludlow.
The "soldiers" will re-enact the life in a Union Army camp during the Civil War. Various activities will take place throughout the three-day event.

Miss Smethport is crowned as McKean County Fair Queen

EAST SMETHPORT – Abby Price, Miss Smethport High, has been crowned as the McKean County Fair Queen.
The coronation took place Saturday night on the final day of the 109th fair at the mini-stage at the fairgrounds in East Smethport.
Sarah Eaton, Miss Bradford High, was named as the first runner-up.
Bettina Cherry, Miss Kane High, is one of five contestants in the county fair queen contest. All five high schools in the county have contestants.

Kane residents come through for VFW’s Troop Support Drop-off

The Kane Veterans of Foreign Wars hosted a “Troop Support Drop-off” on Saturday at their club on Wetmore Avenue. Volunteers met those wanting to donate at their vehicles and accepted items and cash donations to send to local soldiers deployed overseas.

Inaugural KECA Pa. Elk Tag Raffle raises over $150,000

BENEZETTE – Just over a month ago, Governor Tom Corbett signed House Bill 2169 into law. The bill, in part, created a special conservation license that could be chanced off annually to raise funds to benefit conservation and education efforts in Pennsylvania's Elk Country. Working together, in a span of roughly four weeks the Keystone Elk Country Alliance (KECA) and Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) were able to raise over $150,000 selling tickets for the first ever Pa. Elk Tag Raffle.

Elk Expo draws visitors of all ages to Benezette

BENEZETTE – It was a beautiful weekend in Benezette for the 2014 Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Elk Expo, which was held at the Elk Country Visitor Center on Saturday and Sunday.
"We really couldn't have asked for better weather today," Elk Country Visitor Center Operations Manager Carla Wehler said on Saturday afternoon. "It wasn't too hot, wasn't too cold, and there was no rain. It was just a beautiful day and was a little bit overcast. We're pretty excited."

3 St. Marys hunters drawn for elk licenses

BENEZETTE – Of the 108 elk licenses awarded by the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) during their annual elk license drawing, three–all for antlerless elk–went to residents of St. Marys. This year's drawing was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in conjunction with the Pa. Great Outdoors Elk Expo at the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette. It was the first time since 2008 that the elk license drawing has been held during the Elk Expo.

School board approves personnel for coming year

The Kane School Board has approved several personnel appointments for the coming school year that begins Tuesday, Aug. 26.
Appointments approved at a meeting Thursday include:
*Nicholas Byron, a Chicago native who now lives in Ludlow, has been named as a new vocational-agricultural teacher. He replaces Brian Lawson, who resigned two years ago. Roger Gausman served as a long-term substitute for the position last year.

Rihn wins Elk Expo patch contest

During this year's Pa. Great Outdoors Elk Expo at the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette, official event merchandise will be available, including the 2014 elk expo patch. Each year a different four-inch embroidered patch has been made to commemorate the expo, and individuals have had the opportunity to submit their photos of Pennsylvania elk in hopes of having one chosen to be featured on the annual collector's item.

School board seeks help with superintendent search

August 14, 2014

The Kane School Board will be seeking outside assistance as it moves forward in its search for a new school district superintendent.
Acting at a meeting Thursday, the board voted 8-1 to solicit the help of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA) in its search.
Board President Claire Ann Depto joined with board members Dick Coleman, Tom Kerek, Krista Jamerson, Susan Grolemund, Gary Ziegler, Keith Hastings and Linda A. Anderson in approving a search agreement with the PSBA.
The cost is $10,900.
