Eagles Club to host community Thanksgiving meal

All alone for Thanksgiving?
Hungry?
Lonely?
Just call the Kane Eagles Club at 837-9422.
The club on Thursday will host its annual "Linda Haight Thanksgiving Dinner" for anyone in the Kane community who needs a meal on "turkey day."
From noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, club members will deliver dinners in the Kane area. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, dinners will be served at the club at 238 Chase St. at Bayard Street. There is no charge for the dinners.
Walk-ins are welcome. No reservations are required.

Committee backs waste recycling for schools

If all goes as planned, a waste recycling program could be underway at the Kane High School by mid-January.
Recycling also could begin later this school year at the Kane Middle School and the Kane Elementary School.
The school board's Finance/Operations Committee endorsed a recommendation Monday to initiate recycling at no cost to the district.
Linda A. Anderson, the chairman of the committee, agreed with the recommendation along with committee members John Ball, Krista Jamerson and Tom Kerek.

Hamlin awaits loan to pay sewer fee to Mt. Jewett

HAZEL HURST – Hamlin Township still is waiting for a PNC loan to pay its fee for connecting the Lantz Corners Sewer District to the Mt. Jewett sewage treatment system.
Jim Trussell, chairman of the Hamlin Township Board of Supervisors, said Monday that the loan should be in hand "by the end of next week."
Under a decade-old agreement, the township agreed to pay $104,000 to the Mt. Jewett Regional Sewer Authority as a "capacity fee" before making connections.

Panel endorses limit in possible school tax hike

It appears the Kane School Board will again agree to hold a possible 2015 property tax hike under the state-set index for the school district.
The board's Finance/Operations Committee voted 4-0 Monday to recommend keeping any tax hike next year beneath the index of 2.9 percent.
Linda A. Anderson (chairman) favored the recommendation along with committee members Krista Jamerson, John Ball and Tom Kerek. 
The recommendation will go to the full nine-member school board for consideration at the Dec. 4 meeting.

‘Presidential Tea’ is Wednesday at Kane Chapel

The Kane Historic Preservation Society will host its annual “Presidential Tea” on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at the Thomas L. Kane Memorial Chapel on Chestnut Street from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. 
Nov. 26 just happens to be the day Elizabeth Kane started writing her journal. Wife of Kane founder Gen. Thomas L. Kane, Elizabeth began her journal on Thanksgiving Day Nov. 26, 1868.

Fire destroys greenhouse in James City

JAMES CITY – A smoky fire on a frigid Thursday evening destroyed a greenhouse in James City.
Mike Niklas, assistant fire chief for the Highland Township Volunteer Fire Department, said no one was injured.
The call came in about 6 p.m. Thursday for the fire in the greenhouse at the rear of the Tom and Judy Orzetti residence along Ohio Avenue.

Suppression hearing to be set in ID theft case

SMETHPORT – A hearing on a motion to suppress prosecution evidence in a Kane area identity theft case is expected to be scheduled in January.
The defendant in the case is Aimee Carol Anderson Hodgdon, 41, formerly of Kane. Court documents list her address as 213 Faries St., Wilcox.
Hodgdon is accused of using the identity of 86-year-old Mabel Johnson of Wetmore Township to fraudulently obtain a credit card. 
The defendant allegedly used the credit card to make cash withdrawals at Hamlin Bank in Kane and purchases at the Family Dollar and Dollar General stores in Kane.

Mt. Jewett woman is charged with forging checks

A Mt. Jewett woman faces 29 charges—including a dozen felonies—for alleging forging a resident's checks totaling nearly $23,000 while working at the Lutheran Home at Kane.
Melissa Jane Austin, 45, of 39 Brickwork Rd., Mt. Jewett, is scheduled for arraignment today before Kane District Court Judge Dave Engman.
Kane Police Officer Derrick Snyder filed the charges Tuesday after an investigation that began 10 months ago.
Austin also is known as Melissa Ginkel, according to court documents.

Shell gives $1,000 for county Envirothon contest

SMETHPORT – Shell has presented a $1,000 check to the McKean County Conservation District for its annual Envirothon student competition.
Shell is making the donation because there is "substantial" Marcellus Shale natural gas well drilling in the county, it was noted.
The unexpected windfall was presented Wednesday to the district board at its meeting at the 911 emergency communications center on Route 6 near Smethport.
Bill Kahler of Williamsport, a Conservation District field representative for the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), made the presentation. 

County OKs pact to help fund Kane project

SMETHPORT – An agreement approved Tuesday by the McKean County Board of Commissioners will help fund a proposed project on Fraley Street in Uptown Kane.
The McKean County Redevelopment and Housing Authority is planning to create four one-bedroom apartments on the second floor of the Goodwill Store at 86 Fraley St.
The apartments will serve "transition age youth," according to the agreement. The youth may work at the Goodwill Store, it has been noted.
County Commissioners Joe DeMott, Al Pingie and Cliff Lane voted Tuesday to back an agreement with the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency.

Pingie is hoping to lead county government in 2016

SMETHPORT – Al Pingie is hoping to follow Joe DeMott as the chairman of the McKean County Board of Commissioners in 2016.
DeMott, a Republican from Port Allegany, already has announced that he will not seek re-election next year as a county commissioner.
Pingie, a Republican from Bradford Township, is seeking re-election next year to another four-year term as a county commissioner.
Cliff Lane, a Democrat from Turtlepoint, also is planning to seek another term as county commissioner in 2015.

Laura L. Isadore is new county prothonotary

SMETHPORT – Laura L. Isadore is the new prothonotary and clerk of courts for McKean County.
She replaces Bonnie Moore Howard, who retired Nov. 5 due to medical reasons. She served as prothonotary for nearly 30 years.
Howard,a resident of Coleville in Keating Township near Smethport, had worked in the prothonotary's office at the county courthouse in Smethport since 1969. 
A Republican, she had been the prothonotary since winning election in 1985 for the first of eight four-year terms.

Longtime county official won't seek re-election

SMETHPORT – Harrijane Hannon Moore next year will end a 28-year career as a leader in the McKean County government.
Moore confirmed Tuesday that she will not seek re-election next year as the county's register of wills and clerk of orphan's court.
"I've been around long enough," Moore joked in discussing her decision to retire as a public servant.

Causer to host Open House at Kane office

HARRISBURG – Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) is inviting area residents to an open house at his Kane district office on Thursday, Dec. 11, from 3-6 p.m.
The office, located at 55 Fraley St., was previously operated by Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren). However, as a result of the legislative redistricting process, Kane and other communities in western McKean County are now part of Causer’s 67th Legislative District.
