KHS students “Happy” with Lip Dub Video

Hundreds of Kane Area High School students spent last Thursday afternoon running down the halls of the school, smiling, singing, dancing and throwing confetti. Last day of school before break? No, it was the filming of a lip dub video.
Teacher Brian Wymer saw an online contest for school-produced videos that showcased school spirit in a Pittsburgh newspaper. With the Kane football team still playing in the playoffs, he showed some of his students a few of the submitted videos and challenged them to come up with ideas for a KHS video that would show the Wolves’ spirit.

Emporium man struck, killed by vehicle

SHIPPEN TWP. – An Emporium man was struck and killed by a vehicle early Sunday morning while walking along SR 4001 in Shippen Township, Cameron County.
According to the Emporium-based state police, Patrick Allen Hornung, 25, of Emporium and David Meade Croyle Jr., 62, of Emporium were walking along SR 4001, Old West Creek Road, in Shippen Township at 3:01 a.m. Sunday morning when both were struck by a 1998 Pontiac Bonneville operated by Kaitlyn Nicole Crosby, 21, of Emporium, which was traveling west on the roadway.

Ceremony marks closing of Sesquicentennial Time Capsule

The Kane Sesquicentennial celebration-- marking the 150th "birthday" of the community-- came to an end Friday with a ceremony to mark the closing of a time capsule.
A large crowd gathered on a typical cold December evening in Kane to watch chairman Scott Morgan load items into the capsule.
The ceremony took place outside the Kane Depot on South Fraley Street at the railroad crossing. The time capsule has been placed in a concrete vault constructed in an earthen bank on the north side of the Depot.

School superintendent leaves job next week

Dr. Maryann Anderson is ending a 39-year career in education when she retires Tuesday as the superintendent of the Kane Area High District.
Anderson was hired in May 2009 to replace Sandy Chlopecki as the Kane school chief.
Much of Anderson's five-and-a-half-year reign as superintendent has been marked with controversy, dissension and conflicts between her and Kane teachers, certain school board members and certain district parents.

Hearing is Jan. 12 for defendants in dog cruelty case

The two defendants in a dog cruelty case face preliminary hearings Jan. 12 in Kane District Court.
The hearings are set for 1 p.m. Jan. 12 before District Court Judge Dave Engman. The proceedings are open to the public.
Tyler Blair Rush, 33, of 53 E. Main St., Mt. Jewett, and Ashley Reinard, 24, of 11 Boyd St., Mt. Jewett, are charged with cruelty to animals.
Mt. Jewett Police Chief Steve Hale placed the charges last month for the alleged incident in August.
According to court records, Rush attempted to "snap" the dog's neck "in order to kill it." 

2 Kane assault cases are bound over to county court

Two Kane assault cases have been bound over to McKean County Court following preliminary hearings earlier this week in Kane District Court.
The Kane defendants include:
*Jamie Richard Bard, 30, of 618 1/2 Greeves St.
*Darryl Lee Kring, 49, of 316 Johnson Rd.
Bard is accused of striking Alyssa Renzi, 24, at the residence they shared. He also is charged with making terroristic threats for allegedly telling the woman he would "put a bullet in her head."

According to Google, which released a report Tuesday on the top trending terms of the year, the top term overall was "Robin Williams," after the well-known and popular comedian died in August. No. 2 was "World Cup," the global soccer tournament held in Brazil in June. Third on the list was "Ebola," the highly contagious virus.

School issues alert about possible child abductor

Taking no chances, the Kane Area School District issued an alert to students and parents Tuesday about a possible child abductor lurking in a "white van" at school bus stops.
Dr. Maryann Anderson, school district superintendent, said the alert was prompted by an alleged incident in the Smethport School District.
A Smethport student from the Mt. Jewett area of Hamlin Township reportedly "ran away" from a "white van" that pulled up to a bus stop Tuesday morning. 

Decision is pending in sticky Mt. Jewett civil suit

BRADFORD – A decision is pending in a sticky civil suit involving Mt. Jewett Police Chief Steve Hale and Mt. Jewett Councilwoman Linda Berry and her husband, Robert.
Hale is suing the Berrys for allegedly failing to disclose the condition of faulty baseboard heating in a house he purchased from the couple in 2013.
Hale claims the baseboard heating system "was not operational" when he purchased the house at 118 W. Main St., Mt. Jewett. He claims the Berrys failed to mention this defect in a "disclosure agreement" when the house was purchased.

School board names Perry as interim superintendent

As expected, the Kane School Board voted 9-0 Tuesday to appoint Business Manager Steve Perry as the interim school superintendent.
He will assume his extra duties Jan. 1. Superintendent Dr. Maryann Anderson is retiring Dec. 31.
Claire Ann Buckley, who is president of the school board, voted in favor of Perry as the interim superintendent along with board members Susan Grolemund, Linda A.

Water company spending $2.1 million more for Kane upgrades

More upgrades are coming for the water treatment and distribution system in Kane.
Pennsylvania American Water announced Monday that it is spending about $2.1 million for a second “finished” water holding tank and high-service computer-programmed pumps.
“These improvements will supplement our existing facilities and replace infrastructure that was built more than 60 years ago,” Pennsylvania American Water Project Manager Jed Fiscus of Brookville said. “These investments ensure reliable, quality water service for our Kane customers for years to come.”

New Kane postmaster begins work on ‘busiest day’

Jumping right into the fire.
That’s what it felt like for Beth Obenreder, who started work as the new Kane postmaster Monday—considered the “busiest day” of the year for any post office in the U.S. due to the Christmas rush.
Obenreder weighed packages and sold Christmas card stamps as customers stood in line at the Kane Post Office to send their cherished pre-holiday mail to family members across the country.
“We take our jobs seriously,” Obenreder said. “We want to make sure the mail gets where it’s supposed to go.”

3rd Annual Nikky’s Dance Studio show upcoming

Are you ready to get into the Christmas spirit? If so… don’t miss the 3rd Annual Nikky’s Dance Studio Competition Team Christmas show. The Christmas performance is set for this Saturday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Kane High School. The show titled “Oh Santa!” will showcase the competition team’s many talents; including ballet, tap, lyrical, jazz and acrobatics for the whole family.
