The Rev. Philip Pinczewski (right), pastor of St. Callistus Catholic Church in Kane, places ashes on the forehead of Tom Brinkley (left) of Kane during Ash Wednesday Mass at the church. For Christians around the world, Ash Wednesday marks the start Lent. The Lenten season is marked by fasting, prayer and the abstinence from meat in preparation for Easter on Sunday, March 31. The ashes, blessed by a priest, consist of burned palms from the previous Palm Sunday.
