LaRue Smith retires after 51-year nursing career

February 21, 2013

Photo by Ted Lutz – "Butch" Smith hugs his wife, LaRue, who has retired after a 50-year career as a nurse at Kane Community Hospital. The Smiths reside on Boyd Street in Mt. Jewett.

As a young child, LaRue Smith often played "hospital" with her sister.
"I'd bandage her up and pretend she was my patient," Smith said.
This childhood activity inspired a half-century nursing career for Smith, who retired three weeks ago as the "night supervisor" at Kane Community Hospital.
"I always wanted to be a nurse," Smith said. "I had the desire to take care of people."
