Daniel J. Bires, 76, of 9 N. Hillside Ave., Ludlow, died on Friday morning, July 26, 2013 in the emergency room at Kane Community Hospital.
Born April 15, 1937, in Ludlow, he was a son of the late John and Mary Steffan Bires. On June 28, 1956, he married Arlene "Cubby" Irwin who preceded him in death in 2010.
Dan was a self-employed plumber. He was the Ludlow Fire Chief for many years and also served as past president of the Ludlow Fire Department. He was a member and past president of the Ludlow Water Association, a past manager of Wildcat Park, and a former Boy Scout leader. He was a member of the Ludlow Sportsman's Club and helped operate the Ludlow Sewage Treatment Plant.
Surviving are two daughters, Chris (Leland) Swanson and Colleen (Brian) Bastow, both of Ludlow; a son, Jay Bires of San Antonio, Texas; five grandsons, Dan (Tina) Swanson, Ben (Trisha) Swanson, Adam (Katy) Dase, Zach Dase and Blain Bastow; one granddaughter, Brandy Tillery;  and 11 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death, besides his parents and his wife, Arlene "Cubby" Bires, were two brothers, John Bires and George Bires; and a sister, Martha Rambish.
A memorial service will be held at a future date to be announced.
Memorial donations may be made to the Ludlow VFD.
