Nancy Sue Goodwin

August 12, 2013

Nancy Sue Goodwin, formerly of Kane, died of cancer on Aug. 8, 2013.
She was born Oct. 25, 1938 in Kane, in the heart of the Allegheny Mountains. Her father was Berrier Peterson, a logger and a carpenter. She worked at the soda fountain at Bush's Pharmacy, had a dog named Leach and was the Queen of the Hunt one year in high school.
She moved to Cleveland and was a telephone operator for United Airlines. She met Carl Goodwin and they married. The first three years of their marriage they cashed in their insurance and spent every cent they had going to Europe – England and central Europe; Italy and southern Europe; and Sweden and northern Europe including the Soviet Union in the Cold War.
Nancy and Carl had two children, Brian and Douglas. They had a springer spaniel named Duffy and lived in a former farm house in Shaker Heights, Ohio. They went on camping trips to northern Wisconsin, they were taught to ride horses and they learned to sail a Finn Class sailboat by the time they were eight. Nancy managed the family finances and investments and did well at it.
Then they moved to Detroit for Carl’s job in advertising. They lived in an 1885 house on the river. Nancy raised the children and tended to the house while Carl worked in the city. The boys had their boats and went up and down the river. They took a yearly trip to South Bass Island in Lake Erie in the family sailboat.
Nancy encouraged her sons to go to college and supported them financially. Brian graduated from Hope College in Michigan and Douglas graduated from Fort Lewis College in Colorado.
Nancy loved traveling. She and Carl were constantly shuttling from Ohio to Colorado and California, where the boys had moved. She was a great gardener, with a true green thumb. Growing beautiful flowers was her specialty. A new dog joined the family, Cooper, a flat-coat retriever. He traveled to 13 states, from California to Pennsylvania.
Nancy and Carl moved to Colorado in 2010 and lived in Colorado Springs.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Carl Goodwin of Colorado Springs; her son, Brian Goodwin of Laguna Beach, Calif.; her son, Douglas Goodwin of Hot Sulphur Springs, Colo.; her sister, Betty Daley of Bradenton, Fla.; her sister, Joan Huntzinger of Kane; and grandchildren William Goodwin and Benjamin Goodwin.
She was pre-deceased by two brothers, William Peterson and Marvin Peterson; and a sister, Patricia Knapp.
A family memorial service will be held in Kane, Pennsylvania when the leaves turn color in the fall.
