James H. “Slip” Compton

James H. “Slip” Compton, 67, of 6753 Rte. 59, Lewis Run, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013 at UPMC Hamot in Erie.
Born Jan. 17, 1946, in Kane, he was a son of the late Victor and Viola Porter Compton.
In 1962, he entered the U.S. Army Ranger Airborne and served two tours of duty in Vietnam where he was wounded in 1971 and was honorably discharged.
Once home, he was employed by several different oil companies as a drill hand, retiring in 2003 due to illness. He also had been a member of the Lafayette Township V.F.D. where he served as a fire policeman.
Surviving, in addition to his companion of 23 years, Debra Nicklas of Lewis Run, are a daughter, Kelly Compton of Bradford; a son, Randy (Lynn) Compton of Lewis Run; a stepson, Shawn Nicklas (Melissa Morrison) of Kane; two brothers, Roy (Mary Lou) Compton of Kane and Donald (Cindy) Compton of Hazel Hurst; a sister, Charlotte (Emil) Strich of Ridgway; longtime friend Gino Morelli (Diane Myers) of Lewis Run; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Compton and John “Jack” V. Compton.
Family and friends may attend a memorial service at 1 p.m. Friday at the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. in Mt. Jewett with longtime friend of the family, the Rev. Randall Sherlin officiating.
