Helge Peterson

November 28, 2013

Helge Peterson, 92, of 5 Pete Ln., Mt. Jewett, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013.
Born June 8, 1921, in Mt. Jewett, he was a son of  the late Ernest and Anna Peterson. On April 19, 1947, in Johnsonburg, he married Patricia Parana who survives.
Before his retirement in 1979, he had been employed by National Fuel. He was a member of the Mt. Jewett VFW Post 6347 and American Legion Post 574 as well as St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force.
A man both generous with his love as well as his time, Helge was the consummate family man and friend of the community. He could often be found enjoying the outdoors, whether walking in the woods or watching baseball in his backyard on a diamond that the community had built for local youth to enjoy.
A lifelong resident of Mt. Jewett, Helge was also fond of traveling with his wife to Florida each and every winter where the sun and surf were a welcome change from the onset of winter.
Helge's legacy is one of kindness and devotion to those in his life.
Surviving, in addition to his wife Patricia Peterson, are three sons, Ken (Priscilla) Peterson of Durhamville, N.Y., Scott (Karly) Peterson of Mt. Jewett and Jon (Lori) Peterson of Mt. Jewett; a daughter, Kathy (George) Petroff of State College; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death, besides his parents, by three brothers, Marvin, Herbert and Jarl Peterson, and two sisters, Elsie Bergmark and Sylvia Nelson.
Friends will be received at the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. in Mt. Jewett on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Vincent Cieslewicz, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Nebo Cemetery.
