Adventures of a wildlife photographer

February 17, 2014

Photo by Rocky Holland – At a distance, I spotted what I thought might be my first Snowy Owl.

I have written many times about my search for the elusive and rare visitor from the far north, the snowy owl. As far as birds of prey are concerned, the snowy owl is at the top of my “want to see’ list. In late December of 2012 and early January of 2013, reports of snowy owl sightings started to show up. Not in big numbers, but they were seen here and there. In my case it was mostly “there.” I ventured to the shores of Lake Erie, on Presque Isle, with no luck. I probably had waited too long, and the owl or owls, was gone. I got another report that there was a lone snowy owl being seen in some farm land in and around Clearfield County. After spending a day exploring every field in the county, I returned home tired and disappointed. Maybe, with any luck, the snowy owls would return south in December of 2013.
