Gerald W. Nelson (Gerry), 86, died Saturday, April 26, 2014 at his home in Durham, N.C.
The son of Elna and Axel Nelson, Gerry was born March 8, 1928. One of 13 children, he spent his early years in Kane. He married Nancy Johnson, his wife for 53 years, in September 1948. The couple lived and worked in several cities in western New York and Pennsylvania before settling in Pittsburgh, where they made home for their three children. Gerry worked for several companies but always described himself as a salesman, sharing many stories of his days on the road.
In later years Gerry and Nancy moved to Columbia, S.C. to be near family. While living in Columbia they cared for many children in their home, loving and following them into adulthood. Following Nancy’s death in 2005, Gerry relocated to Durham, N.C. where he enjoyed reading, gardening and spending time with his family there.
Gerry is survived by his three children, David and his wife Libby of Durham, N.C., Donald and his wife Maureen Donovan of Orchard Park, N.Y., and Deborah of Lackawanna, N.Y. He also leaves three grandchildren, Ben, Emily and husband, Khedron, and Brett; and two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Kaseryn.
