Tears flow at unveiling of county Vietnam Memorial

June 1, 2014

Photo by Ted Lutz – The Cappello family poses Saturday with the McKean County Vietnam Memorial Monument at the dedication ceremony at Hamlin Lake Park in Smethport. Danny Cappello of Kane was killed in Vietnam in 1967. The group includes, left to right: Jim and Kathy Cappello Elinski of Wilcox, brother-in-law and sister of the fallen soldier; Tom Cappello of Warren, a brother; and Bobbie and Jack Cappello of Kane, sister-in-law and brother of Danny.

SMETHPORT – A gray-haired mother struggled to push her two-wheeled walker through the grass.
Although it was a strain for her, she was determined to approach the Vietnam Memorial Monument bearing her son’s name.
With family members close at her side, she starred at his name etched in the polished granite stone. Then she moved closer.
She finally found the heart-wrenching courage to reach out and trace his name with her fingers.
When she turned away, tears were rolling down her cheeks as a bagpiper played “Amazing Grace.”
This is just one of the emotional scenes Saturday at a ceremony to unveil the McKean County Vietnam Memorial at Hamlin Lake Park in Smethport.
