Carla E. Hilty, 78, of 30 Hemlock Ave., died Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Kane Community Hospital.
Born April 20, 1932, in Natrona Heights, she was a daughter of the late Victor R. and Ethel Nyquist Hilty.
A graduate of Wilcox High School and Grove City College in 1954, she taught English and German at Kane Area High School for 35 years prior to retirement. She also had attended Penn State.
Carla especially enjoyed working with the students and also talking with many of them after their graduation. After nine months of teaching, she became employed with the Summer Playground Program, first as a helper and then as the supervisor. She assisted many young children with the art of making crafts and the art of fair play in many different playground games during her tenure in this position.
As a member of Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church, she served as an Assisting Minister for 18 years and also served two terms on the church council, with one term as secretary. She had been a member of the Altar Guild, the Education Committee, The Scholarship Committee and the Stewardship Committee.
Carla was also a member of local Laureate Alpha Zeta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She belonged to the Retired Teachers’ Association, PSEA and NEA.
She was a lover of all animals, especially her beloved basset hounds, Rommel, Mandy, Maggie, Barney and Rosie.
Carla had an inherited love for Pittsburgh, the native city of her father; therefore, she had been a longtime fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Pirates and the Pittsburgh Penguins. She had also been an avid NASCAR fan.
Surviving are a cousin, Kurt L. Nyquist of Kersey; and a multitude of wonderful friends and neighbors.
Friends will be received at the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. on Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Tabor Lutheran Church on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with The Rev. David Pflieger officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Tabor Cemetery.
