MT. JEWETT – The construction of two new medical facilities in Mt. Jewett is progressing and it won't be long before they're open-- with jobs for the area.
Kane Community Hospital is building a Mt. Jewett physician center along West Main Street near the Mt. Jewett Post Office in the "downtown" area.
The center will house the family medicine practices of Dr. Linda Rettger and Eric Asp, certified physicians' assistant. They now see patients at 5 Boyd St., Mt. Jewett.
The Bradford Regional Medical Center is constructing a health facility along West Main Street near the intersection of Campbelltown Road just outside the "downtown" area.
"Mt. Jewett is very important to our mission 'to serve' and to bring care closer to our patients," Gary Rhodes, chief executive officer (CEO) of Kane Community Hospital said in a statement. "With this investment in community health care, we plan to expand family practice, add internal medicine, OB/GYN and weekend walk-in hours."
Kane Community Hospital is linked with the Hamot Medical Center in Erie. Since Hamot is now part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), Kane also is connected with UPMC-- the largest employer in Western Pennsylvania.
"None of this would be possible without the capital resources of UPMC Hamot," Rhodes said in reference to the Mt. Jewett medical facility.
Jim Fiorenzo, executive vice president and chief operating office for UPMC Hamot, called the Mt. Jewett facility "an investment in community health care for the region."
"It's important that our regional investment starts in the communities where our patients live," Fiorenzo said.
Linda Myers, owner of Myers Trucking in Mt. Jewett and a member of the board for both the Kane Community Hospital and UPMC Hamot, said the Mt. Jewett health facility is "a shot in the arm for our town." She said Rettger "deserves a new place for her dedication to her patients for over three decades."
