BROOKVILLE – The girls track team traditionally has a quality showing and finishes in the top five teams at districts each year, and this year placing third was fantastic for us considering that we only had two seniors participating at the meet. Brookville is unbeatable as a team and Elk County Catholic is always one of the class teams of our area so I was extremely pleased with our team score. The meet for us was marked by big personal best performances and that is exactly how it should be with proper training and motivated, dedicated and talented athletes.
The performance of the day on the track was the 4x400 relay team of Dawn Saquin, Audrey Perry, Chanda Paup and Kelsey Johnson. Their goal all year long was to break the school record in the event and take first at districts and go to the state meet. The record in the 4X400 relay is 32 years old and established in 1980. The record was 4:10.44 and this team of Dawn, Audrey, Chanda & Kelsey ran a 4:10.03 to set a new standard that will last a very long time. These four girls are the most dedicated relay group I have coached in 36 years and today they simply were not going to be denied. It was an exceptionally close race with Cranberry running a 4:10.72 Each of these girls played their role in the relay exceptionally well and to have four girls with that much dedication and speed is a rare thing and watching them run is one of the highlights of my career. This relay team now looks forward to the state meet where our goal lies under the 4:10 mark.
Individually on the track, Dawn Saquin will also be headed to the state meet for the second time in the 300 hurdles. She took second in the event with a PR for this year at 47.22. Very few hurdlers have the speed that Dawn has and her ability to sprint with excellent hurdle technique over the last hurdle was the difference for her today.
In the field Taylor Detrick, Morgan Nicholson and Taylor Bucheit will be making the trip to the state meet at Shippensburg University.
