State Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren) will speak Monday at the annual Memorial Day program in Kane.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion posts in Kane are sponsoring the Memorial Day activities, which features a parade at 9:30 a.m. Monday.
The parade forms at 9 a.m. on Wetmore Avenue and proceeds south on Fraley Street to the “point” area of Evergreen Park at Chestnut, Birch and Fraley streets.
"I'm always honored to be asked to speak to honor our veterans for all their sacrifices," Rapp said Friday.
She said she receives many requests to speak at Memorial Day programs in her state legislative district.
"Kane was my first choice," Rapp said. "We'll be honoring a soldier who lost his life."
Staff Sgt. Kenneth VanGiesen of Kane was killed last July while serving in Afghanistan with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
The program will feature the presentation of the Remembrance Flag to the VanGiesen family of Kane.
A new stone has been placed in the memorial section of the park as a tribute to VanGiesen.
Rapp was first elected in 2004 and has served in the state House of Representatives since January 2005. Her district includes Kane, Mt. Jewett and Wetmore, Hamilton and Hamlin townships.
Rapp has been appointed as a House Republican Deputy Whip. She also serves on the House Finance Committee and the House Education Committee. Rapp is the senior Republican member on the Subcommittee on Special Education.
