The new Family Dollar store on North Fraley Street in Kane is now open for business.
The store, which carries a wide variety of merchandise and groceries, is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The store is open Sundays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The official grand-opening ceremony will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday.
Family Dollar is planning several special events Saturday in conjunction with the grand opening of the store.
Each of the first 50 customers Saturday will receive a $5 Family Dollar gift card. Shoppers who spend at least $25 will receive a $5 discount.
Many other "giveaways" also are planned Saturday.
Kane area residents will see a familiar friendly face when they shop at Family Dollar.
Cindy Oyler, a 1979 graduate of Kane Area High School and a Kane resident, is serving as the acting manager at the store.
Oyler is well-known in Kane during a 20-year career at the former Uni-Mart stores. She later worked for Uni-Mart in Johnsonburg before joining Family Dollar as the manager of the Johnsonburg store on Route 219. She will return to the Family Dollar store in Johnsonburg after helping with the "start-up" at the Kane store.
The Family Dollar store in Kane has 8,400 square feet of space and parking for more than 20 vehicles. Oyler heads a team of 10 employees at the Kane store.
"We have everything from groceries to hardware to bread, milk and laundry soap," Oyler said in explaining some of the features at the Family Dollar store. She said the store has large displays of "seasonal supplies" as well as clothing, shoes and hats. Family Dollar also has an automotive supply section.
"We have a very nice selection of products at a very reasonable price," Oyler said. "I think Kane people will like the variety and the price. A lot of people are comparing prices because they're trying to stretch their dollars."
Oyler and her husband, Sam, reside on Haines Street in Kane. They have two children and two grandchildren.
