ST. MARYS - A former member of the Crystal Fire Department was arraigned Wednesday before District Judge Mark Jacob on charges including arson and related offenses, insurance fraud, criminal mischief, and recklessly endangering another person, in connection with a July 9 fire involving a camper parked in the driveway of his North St. Marys Street residence.
According to the affidavit of criminal complaint, Michael A. Scolari, 25, of 333 North St. Marys St., used a lighter to set fire to his 1999 Coleman Camper as it sat outside the residence, which was occupied at the time by his girlfriend and her daughter. The complaint alleges that Scolari set fire to the camper with the intention of collecting insurance monies on it, as well as the residence and a second vehicle also damaged in the blaze.
According to the affidavit, at approximately 11:35 p.m. on July 9, St. Marys City Police responded to calls of a fully engulfed motor home in the driveway of the residence at 333 North St. Marys St.
The affidavit states the fire grew quickly and was threatening the residence when the Crystal Fire Department arrived on-scene and extinguished the flames.
