Francis X. “Frank” Strau

Francis X. “Frank” Straub, 76, of 123 Terrace Rd., St. Marys, died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at the DuBois Regional Medical Center.He was born May 2, 1935 in St. Marys, son of the late Frank E. and Marguerite (Peg) Bender Straub. Mr. Straub was a lifelong resident of the area. He was educated in the local Catholic schools and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1953, after which he attended Duquesne University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy in 1957. After graduation, he began working full-time for his father and William Smith at St. Marys Drug Store, a store he later became a partner in until he merged with Gene McBride (City) Pharmacy in 1970 and formed the newly remodeled St. Marys Pharmacy Inc. He sold his interests in the pharmacy to his son Frank in 1996. He had worked at the same location for over 50 years. He was a founding co-owner of the Bennetts Valley Pharmacy and he also co-founded the St. Marys Pharmacy Home Health Care, which he managed for many years.He enjoyed going to and working at his camps, including maintaining the Bear Run property, to which he dedicated a great part of his life. He enjoyed big-game hunting, dry fly fishing, horseshoes, snowmobiling, gardening, riding his ATVs and spending time with family and friends. He was on the Board of Directors of the Straub Brewery for 20-plus years. He was a member of the Army National Guard (Company L and Headquarters) in Ridgway from 1957 to 1965. He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the BPOE Elks, St. Marys Sportsmen's Club, PA Pharmaceutical Association, the NCPA (National Community Pharmacy Association), the Forest Landowners Association, the NRA (National Rifle Association), a life member of the North American Hunting Club and was a developer of his gas and oil interests in Wetmore Twp., McKean County, for 25 years.He is survived by his wife, the former Kathryn (Kitty) Lenze, whom he married on Aug. 8, 1991 in Forestburg, N.Y.; four children, Frank X. (Cheryl) Straub III of St. Marys, Pat (Susy) Straub of St. Marys, Paula (Mrs. Louis) Chiappelli of St. Marys, and Rosanne, (Mrs. James) Hannon of Butler; their mother, Barbara Brisson Straub of Smicksburg; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; four step-children, Missy Barnett of Aurora, Colo., Russ (Denise) Klaiber of Kersey, Kim (Mrs. Charles) Axtman of Turbotville, and Scott (Amy) Klaiber of Weedville; and nine step-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Lee Bankovic of St. Marys; his brother, Richard “Dick” (Kitty) Straub of St. Marys; and a brother-in-law, Gary Smith of St. Marys.Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gretchen Smith. A Mass of Christian Burial for Francis X. "Frank" Straub will be celebrated in the St. Mary’s Church on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Taylor, OSB, his cousin, as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail.Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home tonight from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the St. Mary’s Church, 144 Church St., St. Marys, PA 15857; or to a favorite charity.Online condolences may be offered at
