Garold M. Oakes

Garold M. Oakes, 90, of 823 Wood St. (Route 6), Kane, died Friday morning, March 2, 2012 at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus.Born Sept. 27, 1921 in Ridgway, he was the son of Sherman P. and Cecile E. Kinter Oakes. On Nov. 26, 1944 in Kane, he married Lorraine I. Swanson, who died Aug. 4, 2003.Mr. Oakes owned Oakes Gas Company and was a gas and oil producer all of his life.He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kane, where was a trustee and an usher. He belonged to Kane Lodge #566 F&AM,  where he was Worshipful Master twice and was District Deputy, also two times; and was awarded the Supreme Council 33rd degree. He served on its building committee, belonged to the Zem Zem Shrine and the Coudersport Consistory.Garold was a member and Paul Harris Fellow in the Kane Rotary Club, an officer of the Kane Fish & Game Club; and had served on the former Wetmore Township School Board and the Kane Area Union School District, the latter as vice-president and treasurer. A Cub Scout leader, he was active in the Kane Free Methodist Church Camp near Kane; served on the board of directors of the Kane Community Hospital for 27 years, where he was a past president and chairman of the building committee; and past president of the Kane Area School Board, serving on its building committee as well. He was honored as Kane's Citizen of the Year in 1993.Surviving are two daughters, Eileen (James) Anundson of Franklin and Sally (Richard) Guerin of Hollidaysburg; two sons, Garold (Janice) Oakes and Keith (Donna) Oakes, both of Kane; grandchildren Wendy, David, Craig and Adam Oakes, Lisa Boyer, Kevin and Richard Anundson and Matthew and Katrina Guerin. Nine great-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren also survive.Preceding him in death, besides his wife and parents, are three half-brothers, Lowell and Curtis Oakes and Lawrence Jones.Friends may call at the Ronald McDonald II Funeral Home, Inc. today (Monday) from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., where a Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Kane with the rev. William LaVelle, pastor, officiating.
