Zuke Smith

Kane QB Zuke Smith was named the North's Offensive Player of the Game.

BROCKWAY - The North built a 12-0 lead in the second quarter, but the South responded with two touchdowns in a span of 2:34 near the end of the third quarter to go ahead 14-12 in the 6th Annual Frank Varischetti Football All-Star Game at Varischetti Field.

Kane quarterback Zuke Smith, who was named the North's Offensive Player of the Game, hit Mitchell Reiter from St. Marys for a 17-yard touchdown 13 seconds into period number two. The two-point conversion was thwarted.

The lead grew to 12-0 with 5:44 left in the half when Ridgway QB Ben Briggs hit fellow Elker Dom Cherry who fought his way into the end zone for a three-yard score. Again the two-point conversion was unsuccessful.

Brookville's Jack Krug found Dale Kot from DuBois in the end zone to cap off a 70-yard, seven play drive with 3:06 left in the third quarter. Karn City's Nathan Waltman caught a pass from Krug with what proved to be the winning points making it 12-8.

A 30-yard Cherry kick return set the North up near the 50, but Redbank's Kobe Bonanno recovered a fumble on the first play giving the South the ball at the North 44 yard-line.

Waltman hauled in a nine-yard pass from Clarion Central's Cal German on a third-and-five setting his team up at the 30-yard line. Three plays later he caught a 23-yarder from German to make it 14-12 with 33 seconds left in the third. The two-point attempt was denied.

The North had a chance to go ahead when Briggs led them from the South's 42-yard line to the 15 with completions to Ridgway, teammates Alex Bon (17 yards) and Ricky Delhunty (10 yards) with 2:51 remaining. The drive ended in a sack with 1:56 left. The South ran out the clock for the win.

Wolves Josh Buhl, Reese Novosel, and BobbY Rumcik joined Smith on the North squad. All four, along with Gus Traugott will be playing in the Aug. 7 Big 30 Charities Classic.

Full details on the game will appear in Monday's print edition.
